A cousin, also named Phoebe Treon, daughter of Archibald Treon, is a close contemporary, but other than an appearance in the 1860 census with her father and two brothers has so far been untraceable.
She married William H. Collins on 4 Feb 1883 in Shelby County, Indiana.[1][2]
Obituary
Phoebe Jane Treon
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, April 2, at 2 p.m. for Mrs. Phoebe Jane Treon with Rev. Simpson and Rev. Wiles in charge and was laid to rest in the Kirwin cemetery.
Phoebe Jane Treon was born in Shelby county, Indiana, February 12, 1863, and departed this life at the Masonic Home in Wichita, Kansas, March 30, 1950, at the age of 87 years, one month and 18 days.
On February 4, 1883, she was united in marriage to William H. Collins at Edinburg, Indiana, and from that place they came to Kansas and settled on a farm near Kirwin, Kansas, and later moved to Kirwin where she spent the remainder of her life, except the last two years in the Masonic Home in Wichita, Kansas.
While a girl in Indiana she united with the Lutheran Church. Upon coming to Kansas she transferred her membership to the Methodist church at Kirwin in 1900 and remained an active member as long as she was able. No burden was too heavy for her to bear.
She was preceded in death by her husband July 11, 1930, and by her mother and father and two sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing one brother, George Treon of Shelbyville, Indiana, and two sisters, Molly Griffeth, of Franklin, Indiana and Anna Wilkes of Edenburg, Indiana, and one brother-in-law, John Richardson of Glade, Kansas, and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was respected and loved by all who knew her.
The singers were George Stagg, Martha Klontz, Mildred Lemon, Ted Stuckman, Bertha Stuckman, accompanist. Pallbearers were the great nephews of Mrs. Collins, Harold Kendall, Dane Kendall, Alden Kendall, Gerald Kendall, Clarence Brown and Irvin Peugh.
Research Notes
The above obituary (clipping on her Find a Grave memorial) gives clues to a number of siblings who otherwise do not appear on records such as the censuses.
George Treon
Molly Griffeth
Anna Wilkes
unnamed sister married to John Richardson KS
another unnamed sister
It is clear that the household of Archibald Treon suffered some sort of dislocation in the period 1860 – 1870. Mother Phebe is not present in the 1860 census but three children are named there, one of whom is Pheobe/Phebe. Two older children, Andrew and Martin Luther, are also not there but are documented in other ways. The two younger brothers I have not yet been able to find records for other than the one mention in the census.
