Biography

European Aristocracy
Roger Trencavel was a member of the aristocracy in Europe.

Rogièr Trencavèl (Occitan) / Roger Trencavel (French) (later Roger I, Vicomte de Carcassonne, d'Albi et de Razès) was born in about 1090 and was the eldest son of Bernat (Bernard) Aton IV Trencavel, Vicomte d'Albi et de Nîmes, de Béziers et d'Agde, et de Carcassonne and Cécile de Provence. Roger's father Bernard Aton IV had succeeded his father Ramon (Raimond) Bernard Trencavel (the family's name sometimes being spelled as Trancavèl, Trenquavel or Trenquavilli in Latin) as the Vicomte d'Albi et de Nîmes, and as the Vicomte de Béziers et d'Agde, in 1074, and later succeeded his mother Ermengarde de Carcassonne as the Vicomte de Carcassonne, de Béziers et d'Agde in 1099. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Accession

Rogièr (Roger) is referred to in a donation of property to the historic Abbaye Saint-Marie de Lagrasse to the south of Béziers and Carcassonne - in a charter of 21 Mar 1108 that was subscribed to by Roger and his mother: [1]

Bernardus Ato vicecomes Biterrensis et Carcassensis subscribed by Cecilie uxori eius, Rogerii filius eius.

Rogièr was also a party to an agreement in 1114, and he is believed to have been born by about 1090. [1] [5]

His parents Bernat (Bernard) Aton IV and Cécile de Provence ultimately had seven children together - including three sons and four daughters. Following his father's death in 1129, the estates of Carcassonne and Albi, Béziers and Agde, and Nîmes were re-divided among their sons: [1] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Marriage and Succession

By marriage contract of 26 April 1139, Roger married Bernarde de Comminges who was the daughter of Bernard I, Comte de Comminges and Dias de Samatan et de Muret. [1] [2] [7] [8]

Roger and Bernarde are not known to have had children, and Roger's testament dated 12 Aug 1150 named his younger brother Raymond, and his wife Bernarde: [1]

Raimundo Trencavel fratri meo…Bernardæ vicecomitissæ uxori meæ.

A donation of property the following year (1151) to the Abbey of Sylvanès by his younger brother Ramon (Raimond) - who succeeded Roger as Vicomte de Carcassonne, d'Albi et de Razès - was made in memory of his brother fratris mei Rogerii. [1]
