Biography

Anna Catherine Treffian aka Treffien was born about 1725. She came to Nova Scotia aboard the ship "Pearl" from Rotterdam with her family. Ann married Ulrich Hubley July 10, 1753 in Lunenburg. It was his third marriage and the first recorded marriage in the St Johns Anglican Church. Anna died in 1759 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. I am unable to locate any children from this union in the Lunenburg database.

NOTES for MARIA (ANNA CATHARINA) TREFFIAN: The spelling of this name is from Bell’s notes, Register of the Foreign Protestants of Nova Scotia, Volume II page 571) Ulrich's marriage to Maria (Anna Catharina) Treffian on July 10, 1753 was the first recorded marriage in the new Lunenburg settlement, as entered into the records of Saint John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg. In Bell’s notes, Register of the Foreign Protestants of Nova Scotia, is the statement: "another record in Roll II has no date & names Ulric Huble & Christiane Trafine". For some time there has been some confusion about this marriage and specifically the names on the Lunenburg Victualling Lists, however, Bell offers an explanation in his notes on Johann Philip Treffian "Register of the Foreign Protestants of Nova Scotia", Volume II, page 571): Johann Philip Treffian, a 20 year old farmer, traveled to Nova Scotia on the ship "PEARL" in 1751 accompanied by one grown woman, Maria and two young girls, Barbara and Catharina (between the ages of 4 and 14) who traveled at half fare for a total of 3 freights. Johann Philip was not married at the time (he married in Lunenburg on May 27, 1754). Bell contends that Ulrich Hubley actually married Maria Treffian because there were later marriages of the two girls (Barbara on January 3, 1758 and Catharina in 1766). It should be noted that the Lunenburg Victualling List of June 1755 contains only the names "Maria Hubley and Ulrich Hubley". The confusion has come about because the 1756 and 1757 Lunenburg Victualling Lists include the names of Ulrich, Maria and Catharina Hubley, and the name of Barbara Treffian comes immediately after them. This has led some researchers to conclude that there was a child named “Maria” however, Bell dispels this in the following statements: "In view of the facts that these last two, (Catharina and Barbara) follow immediately after 'Maria Hubley' – who appears again in the 1756 & 1757 lists, & that these two appear in marriages later, it seems certain that the ostensible 'Anna Catharina' of the marrriage to Hubley in 1753 must actually have been the 'Maria' Treffian of the PEARL’s list, & that she must have been mother or older sister of the two younger Treffian girls" Regarding the Victualling List of 1756: "Barbara Treffian (no. 59), Ulrich & Maria Hubley (nos. 56 & 57), and 'Cath’n Hubley' (no. 58) – The clerks have evidently made the mistake of registering Catharina Treffian as a Hubley" It quite possible that both girls lived with Ulrich and his wife Maria and that could have led to the confusion. This dispels the former belief that the "Maria" in the early Lunenburg Victualling Lists was a child of either Ulrich’s second or third marriage.
