Biography

Avis was born about 1871. Some records indicate her birth date was 24th May 1873. [1]

Avis appears in the 1881 census as Ivis/Avis Lewis. She is living with a relative David Lewis in the 1881 &1891 census returns. She is described as a visitor or servant. Her birthplace is recorded as Poplar, London. Why her surname is given as Lewis is open to conjecture. What her parents were doing at this time is a mystery. Subsequently it appears that her father died at sea in 1881. He is recorded on her marriage certificate as deceased.

She married William Hope on 25th April 1891. The registration district was Cardiff. Both William and Avis are recorded as living in Barry. William Hope was recorded as working as a stone mason, as was his father James. The father of Avis is recorded as John Towns (a deceased grocer).[2]

In 1901 she is living with her husband William and children in Glenfarg Road, Catford, Lewisham[3]

The family emigrate to the United States in 1908, arriving in New York on 30th March. [4]

She died in 1934 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA. She was buried in 1934 in Knollwood Cemetery. [5]
