Barbara was born 31 December 1771, probably in Québec.[1]
She died 10 May 1790 in Tiverton, Rhode Island.[2] Given the estimated date of birth of her only known child, Barbary [sic] Hart, it can be assumed that Barbara died due to complications of childbirth. Although Peter Hart, the father of her child survived, their daughter was evidently raised by Godfrey Lake and Hannah Hart. Hannah being Peter's first paternal cousin.
The surname is recorded as Tappan, Topain, and once as Turcot (oddly this would have been her maternal grandmothers maiden name).[3]
She may be the illegitimate child called "Barbe" who was baptized 10 January 1772 at the Basilique Notre-Dame of Montréal, "about 8 days old."[4] No parents are named. It is unclear whether her parents were married. Additionally, her mother was from L'Islet and should have been living at Ste-Famille at this time.
Rhode Island and Québec
Barbara's paternal aunt Mary Topham (1732-1803) was married to Richard Simpson (1733-1810), of Rhode Island. Their son John Simpson (1757-1840) was married to Geneviève Talon (1759-1798) on 18 June 1781 at L'Islet.[5] The brother of Geneviève Talon, Pierre Talon was the second husband of Françoise-Élisabeth Cloutier, who was first married Pierre Cloutier (1747-1777), who in turn was Barbara's maternal uncle.
