Biography

Flag of Cornwall (St Piran's Cross, pre-1838)
Jacob Tonkin was born in Cornwall, England.
This profile is part of the Tonkin Name Study.

Jacob, son of Thomas Tonkin, was baptised 1 November 1721 in St Agnes, Cornwall, England. [1] [2]

Research Notes

Baptism records for his children have his wife as Jenifer or Jane, but their marriage is unknown. The first confirmed (sourced) baptism of a child for them is Prudence in 1750 in St Gluvias, which is about 9 miles from St Agnes (where Jacob was baptised). Their next confirmed (sourced) baptism of a child is Elis (Elisabeth?) back in St Agnes in 1752. Perhaps Jenifer/Jane was herself from St Gluvias, and that is why their daughter was baptised there, I can think of no other reason, especially as it is not particularly close to St Agnes.

Death of Jacob and Jenifer/Jane Tonkin is unknown. The Jacob Tonkin buried 1778 in Truro St Mary is not this person. He was a mariner from Bristol according to the entry in the parish register [3] (copy attached). His wife was Fanny (surname unknown) and they had a daughter Mary baptised 1766 in St Philip and St Jacob, Gloucestershire. [4]
