TONKIN On the 20th July at "Torquay" Esmond street Unley, to the wife of Oliver Tonkin - a son. No visitors for six days. [1]

David's father died in 1936 when he was just five years old. His mother Bertha supported herself and her son by teaching piano.
He attended Glen Osmond School, then winning a scholarship attended St Peter's College. He went on to study medicine at the University of Adelaide [2]

On January 31 Dr and Mrs Juttner will give a party at home for Prue's 21st birthday. David is the son of Mrs O.A.P. Tonkin of Myrtle Bank and the late Mr Tonkin. [4]

Prudence Juttner and Dr David Tonkin who were married in St Matthew's Church, Marryatville, this afternoon, have their home awaiting them in New Zealand.
Dr Tonkin has an appointment at the Wellington Hospital for two years, after which the couple plan to visit England. [6] [7]

The children are the daughters of Dr David Tonkin of Adelaide (photograph) [8]

After completing a post-graduate opthalmology course in London, David returned to South Australia and established a practice in Adelaide. He was soon considered one of the city's leading eye surgeons.
His prominence in Adelaide Society and his community service (setting up the first public screening programme for glaucoma in Australia) made him an ideal candidate for the Liberal and County League, becoming the first member for the seat of Bragg in the 1970 State election.
In 1975 he challenged Bruce Eastick for leadership of the South Australian branch of the Liberal Party, he became leader after Eastick stood aside.
Winning the 1979 election, David Tonkin became the 38th Premier of South Australia, he was also the Treasurer of South Australia, positions he held until November 1982 when the Liberal Party lost the election to the Labor Party led by John Bannon.[9] [10]

David Tonkin was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours List 1993 for service to the South Australian Parliament, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and to the Community. [12]

He was awarded the Liberal Party's outstanding achievment award in 2000 by Prime Minister John Howard.

David Oliver Tonkin AO died 2 Oct 2000 at Mengler Hill, in the Barossa Valley [13]
