Arthur was the son of Henry Toms and Sophia Barbary. He worked as an Orchardist being in the employ of RB Jackson of Redwood Valley.
Arthur enlisted WWI, rank Private, serial number 6/372. In October 1914 he embarked on the troopship Tahiti or Athenic from Lyttleton, Canterbury, with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion.
Arthur saw service in Eygpt and later Gallipoli.
In 1915, Arthur was injured by shrapnel in the Dardanelles and died of his wounds on May 9 1915, age 36.
He is buried at Skew Bridge Cemetery, Helles, Turkey. Arthur Toms is also memorialised on his father's headstone at Roxburgh Cemetery.
Arthur's birth was registered in 1878 and his Birth date was 11 January 1878 which is in conflict to 5 January 1880, the date given on his Military file.
