Biography

Mary (Tidd) Kendall immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Mary Tidd (also seen Tydd, Tead, Teed) was born somewhere near Westmill, Hertfordshire, England the daughter of John Tidd, a tailor, and Margaret Unknown. The Tidd family was resident in Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay by 1637 but their ship and date of arrival are unknown. It is believed they arrived as a family although Mary and her siblings were young adults.[1]

On 24 December 1644, Mary married Francis Kendall.[2][3] In many 19th and early 20th century genealogies the fact that the marriage record records Francis' name as "Francis Kendall, alias Miles" led to exceptional flights of fancy that he had fled England under an assumed name for a variety of reasons. This frequently repeated family lore appears to have originated with Dr Rev Kendall of Weston, Massachussets in the early 19th Century who was apparently unfamiliar with the English system of names dating from the transition to formal surnames and extending well into the 17th Century. All of these stories should be discounted, lack any factual basis, and the most succinct address on the topic may be found in Dawes-Gates (footnote page 376).[1]

Mary lived her entire life in the town of Woburn which was begun in 1640 and formally named in 1642. She passed away there in 1705[4] attended by her three daughters following what was described as a painful illness. As Mary Walton Ferris points out in her extended treatment of the Kendall family[1] the Kendall family was prolific with Mary having at least eighty-four recorded grandchildren

I inherited a book: Steele & Related Lines Book II (2000) by Robert Vernon Steele. Mr Steele did his research at Salt Lake City. His records show significant differences in the children. I saw where any comments were to be made here since the record is being re-worked. I created Tidd-2 by mistake, not knowing this record existed.

Maybe I am looking at a completely different person? If someone will give me an address I will copy and mail the info I have for your consideration.

Steele & Related Lines shows children as Ruth b2/17/1675, Thomas b5/18/1677, Mary b2/27/1681, Samuel b./29/1682, Ralph b5/4/1685, Eleazer b11/16/1687, Ephraim b1690, Jabez & Jane (twins) b9/10/1692 and stillborn son b.12/16/1695. - I entered this in Tidd-2

I haven't been back to finish the rework on this profile...was sidetracked (have to check notes as to what wasn't yet completed). What are we trying to determine? Between Dawes-Gates, Wyman and various vital records this seemed solid. There is misinformation on this family in certain LDS pedigrees and it's quite a jumble in a lot of Ancestry trees.

Alan, you are mentioning a Tidd-2 profile which is this profile. Is there another profile with a different ID number?

When I logged in I had the same problem. That's a bummer, I wanted to take a look at it for another profile.

Removing Kendall-5 as husband is probably a mistake. Better to consider removing Kendall-5159 as husband. These two Kendalls may be the same person. Any change here deserves a source.
