Biography

Marie Pétronille Thouin was born at L'Assomption, L'Assomption parish, Quebec, 17 October 1757, daughter of Pierre-Roch Thouin and his first wife, Marie-Charlotte Panneton; and was baptized at L’Assomption the same day—sponsors were Claude Panneton fils and Marie-Judith Loyer.[1] Marie-Pétronille was alternatively known as Marie-Judith Thouin (likely in honor of her stepmother, Marie-Judith Gagnon) and Marie-Angélique Thouin. She died (as Pétronie Touin) 31 March 1830, aged 75, epouse de feu François Etier; and was buried in Ste-Elisabeth, Joliette County, 1 April 1830, Quebec, in the presence of L. M. Brassard and Rev. L. L’Herieux.[2]

Marie Pétronille Thouin married at L’Assomption, 11 April 1774, François Marie Ethier. The witnesses were Jacques Ethier, Pierre Toin, Jean Lefevre, and Maurice Coitou.[3]

François Marie Ethier, also known as François Desanges Ethiers, was born 10 November 1752, son of Jacques Ethier and Marie Marguerite Baron; and was baptized at Repentigny the same day (with the surname spelled Hetie)— sponsors were François Beauchamp and Jeanne Lepaillieurs.[4] He died 7 September 1817, aged about 66, a journalier (day laborer), epouse de Pétronille Touin, and was buried at St. Pierre-du-Portage-de-L’Assomption, 9 September 1817, in the presence of Jean-Baptiste Etier (his son), Pierre Bousquet (his son-in-law), and Louis Marsault.[5]

François-Marie Ethier was called a journalier (journeyman, or day laborer) in the marriage record of his daughter, Marie-Angélique Ethier. It is notable that he had two daughters named Marie-Françoise, of whom both survived and married (which created some confusion in the creation of this family group).
