Biography

Samuel Thornhill/Thornehill, Gent, of Bromley, Kent

Samuel Thornhill was the eldest son of Richard Thornhill, a Grocer of London and Bromley, Kent, and Elizabeth, daughter of William Watson of London.[1][2][3]

Marriage

Samuel Thornhill married Jane White, daughter of John White of St Stephen Coleman Street, City of London.[1][2][4]

it was reported that a monument had existed in the Parish Church of St. Stephen Coleman Street, City of London, with an epitaph as follows:[5]

Here lyeth Dame Jane, Daughter and sole Heire of John White, of this Parish, Esq; First married to Samuel Thornehill, of Bromley, in the County of Kent, Esquire; by whom she had issue two Sonnes, Timothy and John, and one Daughter, named Elizabeth. She secondly married Sir Richard Smith, Knight, Son of Thomas Smith, of Oestenhanger, in the County of Kent, Esquire, and had issue by him but one Daughter, named Mary. The said Dame Jane died the 13. of October, 1607. being about the age of 33 yeeres. In whose remembrance, her said Husband caused this Monument to be made, 1608.

Career

Samuel attended an inn of court and was returned to Parliament for Bramber in 1593.[1]

Samuel Thornhill Esq., was in possession of the Manors of Bredhurst and Merecourt in Kent which he inherited from his father, Richard Thornhill esq.[11]

"In the 13th year of queen Elizabeth, alienated the manor of Pistocke [Tunstall, Kent], and those woods, parcel of it, called Mynchyng-wood, to Richard Thornhill, citizen and grocer of London, whose son and heir Samuel Thornhill, upon his death gave it to his second son Sir John Thornhill, of Bromley, and his son and heir Charles Thornhill, esq. in the reign of Charles II. sold it to Mr. James Tong".[12]

Death and Burial

Samuel Thornhill died on 15 Feb 1597/1598. His father, Richard, outlived him and was his Executor.[1]

Samuel was buried in the church of St Lawrence Old Jewry in the City of London.[1]

Summary of the Will of Samuel Thornehill 1598

The will of "Samuell Thornehill gent, sonne and heire apparent of Richard Thornehill of Bromley in the countye of Kent esquier" was made 10 Feb 1597/1598, witnessed 14 Feb 1597/1598 and proved 20 May 1598.[7]

He made a number of bequests to his wife Jane including lands "in Hartye in the Countye of Kent, whiche were sometymes the landes of John White (her father) deceased".

He referred to his sons Timothy and John, and to his daughter Elizabeth.

He made bequests to others including his cousin Richard Gage, gent., and to a Francis Thornhill.

The rest and residue of his estate including his house at Bromley, Kent, he bequeathed to his father who was named sole Executor and who was charged with the bringing up of the Testator's children.
