There is not much I know for certain about Thomas Thompson's early live at the moment. I have information on him based on research of Al Hotz, which I received through a letter to my husband's grandmother - sadly without any sources. So far the information in this letter has proven to be mostly accurate, though not without flaws (in other cases), but I wasn't able to find many sources to back up his theories on Thomas yet.

Biography

Born

Born 19 Mar 1860 in Norway.[1]

Thomas Thompson, is born to Ole Thompson and his wife Martha Gord in Norway.[2]

I don't know anything about Thomas childhood in Norway. Where exactly he lived and what his father's occupation was during that time. Any help in researching Thomas Norwegian roots would be great!

According to the research of Al Hotz, the Thompson family came to the US in 1868 with five children: Ole and his wife Martha, their daughters Elleanore Thompson and Anna Thompson and their sons Thomas Thompson and George Thompson. The fifth child was Samuel Thompson, on who I have no further information. In the 1910 Census Thomas' year of immigration is also given as 1868, but it varies greatly throughout the years: in 1905 it is recorded as 1878 (this one might have been supposed to be 1868), in 1915 as 1872, in 1920 and 1925 as 1871.

So far I have not found the Thompsons on a shipping list, nor on a 1870 Census. Both would be very helpful to find out details.

In 1880 Thomas parents and younger brother George are listed in Freedom Township, LaSalle County, Illinois[3].

There are too many Thomas Thompsons born around 1860 in Norway to locate the right one in 1880 without knowing anymore details, like where he actually lived at during that time.

According to the 1905, 1915 and 1925 South Dakota State Census, Thomas settled in South Dakota in the mid 1880ies.
