Biography

Art Thompson (my grandfather) was born on the family farm near Oak Ridges, Ontario, but most of his adult life was spent living in the city of Toronto. His career was with Bell Canada. He and Annie had three children, but the first two (born between 1910 and 1920) died within a few days of birth. I was always told that she had to spend most of her third pregnancy in bed, and that my father's blood was exchanged at birth, in order for him to survive. This is just family lore, and may be a little garbled, but it is true that my father was raised as a very spoiled only child! I am the eldest of Art's four grandchildren and the only one who can remember him, as he died when I was five. While I never saw it, he was reputed to be cursed with the family temper, which his brother, Frank, said could be traced back to their Irish grandmother, Ellener (Kirk) Winn. Grandpa was very fond of fruit, vaudeville shows, and pranks. He raised prize gladioli. Although he was active and fit, he died quite suddenly of his first and only heart attack at the age of 69.
