William Thompson/Tomson, son of Richard Thompson and Bridget Fleming,[1] is estimated to have been born about 1554 in Yorkshire, England.[2]
William Tomson married Elizabeth, daughter of John Barker of Scarborough,[1] on 23 Nov 1579 at Rotherham Minster, Yorkshire (West Riding), England.[3]
William died between 9 November 1635 (date will written) and 7 March 1637/8 (date of probate) at York, England.[1]
There is no evidence William was ever in Virginia. Death place of "Richmond, Wise, Virginia" has been removed as inaccurate and, indeed, impossible.

Thomas Beckwith of York combined the Visitation pedigrees, but he didn't know how, so he guessed. Poulson, Hunter etc copied Beckwith's version. But it's quite impossible, as Christopher of Hull and William MP would be born before their alleged father.
Beckwith's version of the early Thompsons, as garbled by Clay, in Hunter's FMG, vol 2, page 531.
Probably also Beckwith's, as differently garbled by Poulson: vol 2, page 63.
