Biography

Sarah was born 11 Apr 1801 in Connecticut.^[1]

Martin Scranton and Sarah Thomas of Killingworth were married 12 May 1819 in Guilford.^[2]

Sally and Martin had 13 children.

In 1820 she was living in Killingworth, Middlesex, Connecticut^[3] The household included 1 male age 26 to 44 (Martin), 1 female under age 10 (Sarah), 1 female age 16 to 25 (Sarah).

In 1830 she was living in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut^[4] The household included 1 male under age 5 (Charles), 1 male age 5 to 9 (Thomas), 1 male age 30 to 39 (Martin), 1 female under age 5 (Phebe), 1 female age 5 to 9 (Parnel), 1 female age 10 to 14 (Sarah), 1 female age 20 to 29.

In 1840 she was living in North Branford, New Haven , Connecticut.^[5] One person was employed in agriculture. The household included two males under age 5 (Francis, Edmund), 1 male age 5 to 9 (George), 1 male age 40 to 49 (Martin), 1 female age 10 to 14 (Phebe), 1 female age 15 to 19 (Parnel), 1 female age 20 to 29 (Sarah), and one female age 30 to 39 (Sarah). Thomas and Charles are no longer in the household.

In 1850 she was living in North Branford, New Haven, Connecticut.^[6] The household included Martin Scranton 53, Sally Scranton 50, Dayton R Scranton 9, James M Scranton 7, and Luther B Scranton 3. Martin was a laborer.

In 1860 she was living in North Branford, New Haven, Connecticut.^[7] The household included Martin Scranton 63, Sarah Scranton 59, and Lester Scranton 13. Martin was a farm laborer.

In 1870 she was living in North Branford, New Haven, Connecticut.^[8] The household included Martin Scranton 74, Sally Scranton 69, and Luther B Scranton 23. Martin was a blacksmith with real estate valued at $300 and personal property valued at $100. Luther was a joiner.

She died 11 Dec 1876^{[9][10][11][12]} and is buried with her husband in Center Street Cemetery, Wallingford, New Haven County, Connecticut.^[13] In the summer of 2023, the sexton at the Center Cemetery indicated that the gravestone, connected for Martin and Sarah would have been made after both had died.

Research Notes

It is not certain that she was born in Killingworth. She was "of Killingworth" at the time of her marriage. She could have moved in the 18 years between her birth and her marriage.

Since she married at 18, it is not likely that she was married before her marriage to Martin Scranton.

The church record abstracts for her marriage^[2] identify her as Sally Thomas, of Killingworth. Her gravestone^[13] reads Sally Thomas wife of Martin Scranton. Erastus Scranton^[1] identifies her as Sally Thomas of Killingworth. Alvin Talcott^[14] identifies her as Sarah Francis, daughter of Thomas of Killingworth. This evidence would lead to the conclusion that she was Sarah (Sally) Thomas.

It is believed that parents were - Friend Wicks Francis (1773–1822), and Hannah White (1776–1856). ^{[citation needed]} It is not likely that she was the daughter of Friend Wicks Francis. She appears in one unsourced Ancestry family tree. She does not appear in either the Friend family genealogy or in his will.
