Very little is known about our great grandmother before her marriage to William Jansen in 1869. She had come from Germany only 2 years prior. It wasn’t very typical for a young woman (she would have been 17) to travel alone from Europe. Usually, a family member or friend would also make the trip. There are Thom families located in Carver county, not far from New Ulm, Brown, Minnesota where Minnie and Will married and had a home. William Jansen was a bootmaker and barber. She and William had 6 children; Frank, William, Wilhelmina, Charles, Edward and Rose. Her 2nd husband, William Joseph gave her 4 more children; George, Johanna, Caroline and William, Jr. Wilhelm Joseph was born in Kane county Illinois, and his parents came from Bavaria and Prussia (Now both areas part of modern Germany). They moved to Scott county, Minnesota in the late 1850’s. William Joseph married Minnie Jansen in 1882 (1900 U.S. Census). They lived in Ramsey county, near St. Paul for almost 10 years before moving to a farm near Swanville in Morrison county. The Joseph’s are buried in Spring Brook Cemetery north of Swanville, Minnesota
