The 1861 census records Benjamin, age 12, in the St Pancras district of London, living with his parents. His birthplace is recorded as Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[1]
Unlike most of his family, Benjamin did not go on to the stage. Instead he worked his passage to Australia.[2] He sailed on the Dover Castle, leaving London on 15 January 1870 for Melbourne.[3]
Benjamin went on to work in India[2] for the South Indian Railway, and then in Mandalay, Burma for a firm of brewers and distillers.[4]
