Biography

Baptism - I could not locate a baptism record, census records show he was born in Little Holland, Essex.

Marriage banns details: Isaac was a bachelor. Banns were read on 19th and 26th March 1848 and 2nd April 1848. William Le??on was the vicar. Isaac married Susannah Middleton in Brightlingsea on 22 April 1848[1]

1848 – Living in Brightlingsea.

1850 – Living in Brightlingsea. Working as a mariner.

1851 – Surname is listed as Terrace. Address is Spring Road, Brightlingsea. Susan’s mother, Elizabeth Middleton, is staying with them; she is a nurse. Isaac is listed as a mariner.

1861 – Susan is listed with children, but Isaac is not at home.

1871 – Master mariner on the Lord Nelson. His son Isaac Terris Jnr is listed at ships Mate. The vessel is at Beccles Point, Suffolk. There is a Susan Terris living in Ipswich, with her son Arthur Terris, but date of birth is C1826. Is this a mistake?

1874 – Isaac Jnr marries Fanny Juster in Ipswich.

1881 – Master Seaman on the Phoenix. Isaac Jnr is master of the Amazon. Isaac Jnrs wife Fanny and son Ernest Lawrence Terris are on the boat with him. Susan Terris is staying at 51 Woodhouse Street, Harwich. Her surname is spelt Terriss. Her son Arthur is with her. He is listed as a Boat builder and shipwright. Jemima Hammond and her son Reuben Hammond are also staying with her.

1886 – Susan possibly died (Need certificate)

1886 - A huge gale, which sometimes reached hurricane level, hit the UK coastline in 1886. Isaac was Master of the Matilda. He was sailing from Portsmouth to Harve. His ship capsized in the gale and he drowned. Thomas Gill, Mate, also drowned. Ernest Calpin, Carpenter, survived by swimming to shore.

Burial site - West Ham Cemetery (Newham). Burial date is 21 October 1886. Cause of death was drowning.
