Joseph Tener was born about 1839 in Adams, Ohio, United States, son of Jonathan Tener (~1805 - ~1885) and Letitia (Copeland) Tener (1805 - 1847).

He was likely one of the two boys under age 5 in his father's household in the 1840 census of Franklin Township, in Adams County.[1] And he was enumerated with his family in 1850.[2]

He was still living on his parents' farm in 1860, but unlike his brothers, he was working as a teacher.[3]

Along with his brothers Dynes, James, and Daniel, he enlisted in the 70th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 17 October 1861. He and Daniel received medical discharges on 24 December 1862.[4][5]

He reenlisted in Company "B" of the Ohio 175th Volunteer Infantry in September 1864, and was mustered in as a Sergeant. The regiment was attached to 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, XXIII Corps, in the Army of the Ohio. Assigned to guard the Tennessee and Alabama Railroad, he was captured on the 24th of November during the Battle of Columbia.[6] He was taken to Cahaba Prison in Alabama, where he died on 15 Jan 1865. The Ohio Roster indicates that he was buried in Marietta, Georgia,[7] but there is no marker for his grave.[8]
