This template is managed by the War of 1812 and the Military and War Projects.

This is a sticker and should be placed below the biography header of profiles, it is not a project box, which for this project is {{War of 1812 Project}}.

Format
{{War of 1812
| image = image file
| startdate = mmm dd, yyyy
| enddate= mmm dd, yyyy
| branch = <service branch> or <country>
| units= unit1; unit2, etc
| unit= first unit served in
| rank=rank}}

The image can be a country or unit flag, etc. If not entered a default image will display

|branch= displays on the sticker - "served with the <branch> during the War of 1812", it can be the country, or the branch - United States Army, United States Navy, etc

if |rank is entered, that will display on the text prior to the name, if not, the profile prefix entry, if present, will be used.

The |units= parameter is free text so the template cannot make assignments to a category using this parameter since it can

be more specific than the level we are creating categories for, i.e. Company B, 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment
have parent commands of Brigade, Division, Army, etc
have abbreviations, i.e. 1st Regt.
have multiple units, i.e 1st Infantry; 7th Cavalry

To overcome this, you can identify the first unit served in using |unit=. To correctly create the category, add |unit=<unit> to the sticker line, and the sticker will format the category name to add the profile to using <unit>, War of 1812. If multiple units are listed, to add the profile to the 2nd, 3rd, etc., the profile will need to be added to the category explicitly with [[Category: <unit>, War of 1812]] for each of them. Examples of <unit>, based on the most specific name that you know, are:

  • Second Regiment, Kentucky Militia (Jennings')
  • Kentucky
  • 1st Regiment of Artillery, United States Army
  • United States Army
  • United States Navy
  • United States of America

If the category listing on the profile shows up as RED check the spelling/punctuation and the parent category (if Kentucky militia, look in Category: Kentucky, War of 1812 to see if it is spelled the same way. If all looks correct, you can create the new category, default text for the new category should be listed in the HELP! section of the parent category.

If no |unit is listed, the profile will be added to Category: War of 1812
