Obituary

MRS. W. BILSBOROUGH — The death occurred at Maryborough late on Sunday night of a highly respected resident of Howard in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth Bilsborough. The late Mrs. Bilsborough, who was born in Wales, came out to Brisbane in the year 1881 in the ship Devonshire. She resided in Ipswich until her marriage in 1891 to Mr. William Bilsborough, when they moved to Howard where she had resided until her death. The deceased and her husband had one of the best known orchards on the Burrum River. Mrs. Bilsborough is survived by a sorrowing husband, two daughters, Mesdames Geo. Blackley and A. Keene, Howard, and three sons, Messrs. William Henry, Thomas Leslie and Raymond Claude Bilsborough, all of Howard. The funeral moved from the Howard Methodist Church for the Howard Cemetery on Monday and was largely attended. [2]

Research Notes

DoB estimates from death registration and FamilySearch.

Possible immigration:

  • Ship: Jumna (London 29JUL1887 to Brisbane 18SEP1887)
    • William 39 (Miner from Somerset)
    • Harriet 39
    • Elizabeth 10
    • Richard 8
    • Hannah 5
    • Caroline 3
    • Margaret infant

The details provided in the obituary do not seem to be correct.

  • The date of immigration seems out. While there is no ship Devonshire, there was a ship Duke of Devonshire. This ship made voyages to Australia arriving in Apr 1883, Oct 1883, Jul 1884, Sep 1887, Apr 1894, Nov 1894, May 1895, Nov 1895, ...
  • The marriage is registered in 1894, not 1891.
