Hi Rita,

Please be very careful when creating a profile or changing the Last Name at Birth. If you are not sure what the correct LNAB is then you can give it an Anonymous surname. Then explain it in the biography and add it to other last names in the data fields. Please look over this page on Correcting a Last Name at Birth.

If you have any questions let me know

Laura, can you tell me which one you are talking about. Thank you

Yes, Rita, it was Lavina (Runnels or Reynolds) Ruff. I understand that you may be unsure which is correct at this point, but it is more appropriate to use anonymous until you know. A surname of Runnels_or_Reynolds will create suggestions from the system. It also will put it in a category of its own, notice the number is 1. That means that is the only profile with that surname on WikiTree. You are very welcome. :)

I thought so. So many people say Reynolds - you know how those days went. So I am just going to change it to Reynolds. Although their marriage record does say Runnalds.

Thanks so much.

You are welcome. Yes, surnames in the past were often either not spelled correctly, or not transcribed correctly. I would not change that one profile again, but you may want to make a note of it in the biography. In the future, it is best to try to find a few sources and follow the surname on your sources. Sometimes surname spellings also changed over time and we use the "In their time, not ours' guidelines. Thank you for correcting it.

Yes, I am hoping to get some hits on my Truline's on Ancestry. The only source that I have was their marriage record. But I have another ancestor Caleb Canady - some changed to Kennedy some stayed Canady. I am the co-leader of our Talton-Tarleton-Tarlton participant study group. My surname is Talton, but of course, "supposedly" if went from Tarleton to Tarlton then some changes to Talton.

Again Thank you so much

Good luck! I know just how tricky those name changes can be making it harder to trace your ancestors. 🙂

Hi Rita!

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz.

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Hi Rita,

Thanks for having a big heart and adopting the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention those profiles need.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up gedcom biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Hi!

You have been a member for about two weeks. How is it going so far? Was the first page of the How-Tos helpful or did it leave you with questions? It has confused the best of us at times!

Did you know that if you click the green tags on your profile page, you can see if other members are following that tag. Add your interests, surnames, or locations to your profile. The more tags you add the more links to community & research options.

Any problems or queries just click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page or send me a private message.

David ~ WikiTree Greeter

P.S. Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile, links will work from there.

Hi Rita,

Thanks for volunteering! You are now a full member of the WikiTree community, and can start adding your family. Let me know if you have any questions.

Since WikiTree is different from other genealogy sites, we have a guided tour for new members at New Member How-To. Feel free to work through the How-Tos at your own pace.

Once you add profiles to WikiTree they become searchable and in my experience persons interested in these profiles will contact you and may provide further information to expand your family tree.

Great to have you on board, enjoy, and good luck growing your branches.
