Edward Count Taaffe was born on February 24, 1833, and died on November 29, 1895. He is the son of Ludwig Count Taaffe and Amalie Princess von Bretzenheim.
As a child, he was selected as a companion to Archduke Francis Joseph (later Emperor of Austria), who in 1848 was crowned Emperor of Austria.
He studied law at the University of Vienna and entered the Austrian civil service in 1852. In 1863, he was named Stadtholder of the Duchy of Salzburg and, in 1864, he became a member of the Bohemian Landtag, before becoming Stadtholder of Upper Austria in 1867.
During the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, he was offered the position of Minister of the Interior, becoming Vice President of the Cabinet and joined the First Ministry of Austria. From 1868 to1870, he served as Minister President.
Becoming Governor of Tyrol, he returned as Minister President in 1879, serving until his resignation in 1893. He is particularly remembered for election reform in 1882, and his efforts to unite the ethnic minorities in the empire.
He succeed to the Viscountcy of Corren in 1873, on the death of his brother.
