Biography

Notables Project
Leó Szilárd is Notable.

Leo Szilard was a Hungarian-born physicist who was among the first to envision nuclear chain reactions, as early as 1933. Wrote the letter which Albert Einstein sent to Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning of likely German efforts to develop atomic bombs and leading to the Manhattan project.

This was far from Szilard's only contribution to science. He was an inventor of the linear accelerator and cyclotron, and even made significant contributions in biology. Not all of his work was in research. He founded an organization which helped many scientists escape Nazi Germany, and had other interests too extensive to describe here.

He was called Leo Spitz until age 2.[1] His 1937 United States naturalization records include both names.[2]

Leo married Gertrud Weiss in 1951 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States.[3]

He died in San Diego, California in 1964. His mother's maiden name was recorded as Vidor.[4] [5] [6]
