Armengol I er d'Urgell , also called Ermengol, Ermengaud, Armengaud, Hermenegildo in Spanish , nicknamed the Cordouan ( 974 - 1010 ), was count of Urgell ( 992 - 1010 1 ).

He was the second son of Borrell II of Barcelona and his first wife, Luitgarde de Toulouse. He was the founder of the Earls of Urgell dynasty. A man of great culture, he led a policy of opening towards Europe , making long trips to Rome , in 998 and 1001 . He pushed his nobles to travel to Santiago de Compostela or Le Puy .

He continued an intense belligerent activity against Al-Andalus . He was taken prisoner in 1004 in Albesa in the fight against the Saracens of Lleida . In 1006 , Abd al-Malik al-Muzaffar made a new incursion against the Segarra and Ribagorza , and was routed at the battle of Tora . Armengol I first participated in the expedition that his brother Ramon Borrell effected in 1010 against Cordova, struggling to battle al-Bakr Aqbat at the Battle of the Guadiaro River , in which he died at the age of 37.
