Kathy (Sundvall) Pelletier has Swedish ancestors

I have been working on my family history since my daughter was born in 1996 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

I'm 100% Swedish on my father's side. Once I got over my initial fear of researching in Sweden, I found it quite easy most of the time. On my mother's side I am English and Irish.

My parents and my children have all taken DNA tests at my request. I have taken one myself, of course. I have been trying for a few years to connect DNA matches but find it difficult. My immigrant ancestors all came to North America between 1902-1907, so my matches are a bit thin.

My most frustrating brick wall centers around Francis Hanley Johnstone, my 3rd great grandfather and his wife Elizabeth Goode. I can't yet determine who their mothers are. Another more recent mystery is that of my 2nd great grandfather George Henry Johnstone. I have not been able to prove with DNA that Francis Hanley was his biological father. Of course, it doesn't help that he was an only child!

Places I've lived

As a child I moved frequently with my family as my father was in the Royal Canadian Air Force. I was born in Bistroff, France and moved to Moose Jaw at the age of 1. My younger sister was born there. We moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba when I was 5. Then on to Bagotville, Quebec, Toronto, Ontario, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Chatham, New Brunswick and Ottawa, Ontario. The day we moved into our home in Ottawa, I was 16 and told my mom I was never moving again. I was wrong!

I married in1986 and with my husband moved to Oshawa, Ontario where my oldest son was born. We then moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1990. We divorced in 2012.

I've lived with Moose Jaw as my home base since 1990, but with my current husband I am again frequently on the move. He teaches in various northern First Nation communities. With him I've lived in Red Earth, Saskatchewan, Poplar River, Manitoba, Pauingassi, Manitoba, God's Lake Narrows, Manitoba and Wollaston Lake, Saskatchewan. We are currently based in Black Lake, Saskatchewan.
