Daniel Summers served as a mechanic during World War II. He was one of the “Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen,” a term that Tuskegee University broadly defines to include “any man or woman, military or civilian, black or white - who served at Tuskegee Army Air Field or in any of the programs stemming from the ‘Tuskegee Experience’ between the years 1941-1949,” prior to desegregation in the Armed Forces in 1948.” The Tuskegee Airmen were known for heroic combat service in support of Allied Forces in the European Theater. They served with the 332d Expeditionary Operations Group and the 477th Bombardment Group, both largely Black units of the United States Army Air Forces. [1]
Daniel A. Summers was born in 1920 to Arnold Summers and Sena J. Cooper in Dauphin, Pennsylvania, United States.[2]
In the 1930 census Daniel (age 9) was the son of Arnold C Summers at 1706 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania, United States.[3]
Daniel (age 23), son of Arnold C Summers & Sena J Cooper, married Lillie S King (age 19) on 3 March 1943 in Election Precinct 29 Alabama City, Etowah, Alabama, United States.[4]
Daniel married Ethyl Mae Smith around 1949 as he is married to her in 1950. (See research notes below)
In the 1950 census Daniel (age 30), Armed Forces, was the married head of household in Roswell, Chaves, New Mexico, United States.[5]
Daniel was in a Social Security record on 29 October 2007.[6]
Daniel died on 29 Oct 2007. He is buried in South Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Tucson, Arizona.[7]
According to his obituary and the 1950 census he was married to Ethyl Mae Smith Summers, though no divorce or marriage record has been found. However, Lillie is divorced and living with her sister Grace King in 1950.

Daniel A. Summers, Sr, of Tucson, AZ passed peacefully on October 29, 2007. Born June 9, 1919, to the late Arnold C. and Sina (Cooper) Summers in Harrisburg PA, Daniel was the 7th of 8 children. A 1937 graduate of John Harris High School, he attended Hampton University and later journeyed to Tuskegee, Alabama to become a part of the Tuskegee Airmen program, the first unit of African American airmen. He remained with the program until its completion, becoming part of the newly integrated Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. During his 22 years in the Air Force, he served in three wars, retiring as an SMSgt. in 1966. He went back to college, completing Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education at the University of Arizona. He taught 4th, 5th, and 6th graders for the next 14 years, followed by an active retirement of traveling and encouraging friends and family. He is now reunited with his wife and partner of 58 years, Ethyel "Pee Wee" Summers. He is survived by sister Edythe S. Johnson of Harrisburg, Pa., daughter Jeanne (Norman) Nash of Nashville, TN, son Daniel A. Summers, Jr. of Tucson, AZ, a daughter adopted in adulthood, Justine Poole, and five grandchildren: Karen Nash James, Mark Nash, Sean, and Chris Summers and Nikki Poole. He is further survived by a host of family and friends who will miss his quick wit and generous heart. A memorial service will be held on December 15, 2007, at 1:00 PM at South Lawn Mortuary, 5401 S.
