Noted Perth Architect Dies Major Edwin Summerhayes, who died in a private hospital at Belmont yesterday and who was buried in the Guildford cemetery today survived his wife by only three weeks. In the early nineties he was married in Melbourne to Miss Florence May Camm. They lived in Western Australia for about 50 years.
They had a son and a daughter — Lt. Col. R. Summerhayes, of the A.I.F., and Mrs F. L. Henstock, of Ceylon.
Trained as an architect in Melbourne under the late William Pitt, designer of Victorian Parliament Houses and many other outstanding Melbourne buildings, Mr Summerhayes became prominent in his profession in Perth as also did his son, whom he trained. Father and son designed a number of prominent city buildings. Their plans for the University buildings for W.A. were adjudged to be next in merit to those adopted.
Leaving Melbourne for Coolgardie in 1894, Mr Summerhaves became one of the band of cyclists who carried messages to outback parts. Some of his journeys were arduous and precarious. He had been a prominent racing cyclist in Melbourne, when he twice finished prominently in Austral wheel races on the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Before the last war Mr Summerhayes held a commission in the citizen forces. He enlisted and served abroad in the last war as second in command of the 44th Battalion but was invalided home from France in 1917. For a term he was officer in charge of Rottnest camps.
For the last six years or so Mr and Mrs Summerhayes lived in retirement at Gooseberry Hill.
