Biography

Ann was a daughter of Samuel Suffolk and Ann Harris. There is no baptism for an Ann Suffolk before the death of her father Samuel, but on 28 February 1796, an Ann daughter of the Widow Suffolk was received into the church at Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England. [1]
[1796 February] 28 Ann Terry Daug'h of Widow Suffolk received in to the Church 19yrs 1/2 Old
If this is the correct Ann, then she would have been born around August 1776 and she would have been 26 years old when she married William Cook(e). Perhaps she had had an emergency private baptism at birth and on declaring that she was going to travel to London, her mother realised that there was still this ceremony to perform. The significance of the middle name Terry is unknown. An "Ann Suffolk, Widow" presumably Ann's mother died in Nuneaton in 1800.

She married William Cook(e) at St Leonard's Shoreditch, Middlesex, on 22 August 1802.[2]

William was a weaver, as noted in the baptism of his children.

Ann and William had the following Children:

  • Henry William Cook born on 8 November 1819 but not baptised until 18 October 1829 at St Leonard, Shoreditch. This was the same day as their daughter Elizabeth Cluly and husband Henry had their son Henry William Cluly baptised at the same church and they are consecutive entries in the register. Both couples gave their address as Kingsland Road, and they may even have been living in the same house.

Ann appeared in the will of her brother Samuel Suffolk dated 7 April 1840 as "sister Ann, wife of William Cooke". [3] It appeared that Samuel, Mary Orton (widow) and Ann Cooke were the only survivors of the nine siblings, and Samuel left the bulk of his estate to Mary initially, with the entail to Ann when Mary died. The full transcript of the Will is here. Samuel stipulated that after Mary and Ann had both died, the estate was to be divided between Samuel's nephews and nieces from all his siblings.

Mary Orton died in 1855 and left a Will dated 1848. [4]
A full transcription is here.
Mary was followed the directions left by her brother Samuel Suffolk in the division of the estate, as the money had come from him originally.
Abstract of the Will:
Mary Orton of Nuneaton, widow
Executor and Trustee of estate Thomas Gray of Nuneaton, farmer
Estate to be equally divided into six parts between:
Ann the wife of Edward King of Birmingham
William Atkins of Birmingham
Samuel Suffolk of Birmingham
Frederick Cook of London
William Henry Cook of London
and the other between the Two children of Elizabeth Cluly of London.

Ann and William Cooke appeared to be both alive in April 1840 to be included in Samuel's will, but not alive in 1855.
