DEATH OF MR RICHARD STURT
So close on the heels of the railway disaster at Exeter and the deep gloom it occasioned on Tumut Plains, comes the unexpected and mournful intelligence that on Friday last, at his residence, on Tumut Plains, at the age of 67 years, Mr. Richard Sturt had succumbed to an attack of pneumonia and pleurisy for which he had been attended by Dr. Browne. His illness, which was of short duration, was first noticed on the 21st instant, when he complained of pains in his legs, and on Sunday he sent for Dr. Browne, who diagnosed his case as one of pleurisy, and treated him accordingly, but, not improving, the doctor was called in again and he said he had contracted pneumonia. This was on 24th instant, and up to the time of his death he suffered considerable pain, but all that could possibly be done was done, and, though he had an agonizing time, death finally put a peaceful end to his sufferings. At our last Show he received the 2nd prize tor best rider over 6o years of age. He was present at the last Gundagai Show, and returning therefrom expressed himself as never better in his life. The departed who was born at Tumut Plains, was regarded as a patriarch amongst the Tumut Plains farmers who looked upon him as a true friend and counsellor, ever ready to assist or give advice to one and all. His parents, long since departed, were amongst the oldest residents, and were highly respected in their day. They owned a small property which the late Mr. Richard Sturt largely added to. In his earlier days, before the advent of the railway to Tumut, he was regarded as one of the "kings of the road" in his carrying pursuits, and his well-appointed team, of worthily caparisoned horses, well groomed and fed, evoked admiration at that time. With his courtesy and perseverance, and strict attention to his farm he became in affluent circumstances, and laid aside the drudgery of his pioneering days. He was a keen supporter of agricultural Shows, was for many years a committeeman of the Tumut Society and a prizetaker at both Tumut and Gundagai Shows, and took his place as judge in farm produce at Batlow, Tumbarumba and Corryong, in each place giving eminent satisfaction. He was an up-to-date farmer, working on scientific lines, and his advice was cherished by many a new beginner. He was ever hospitably inclined and "Old Dick" (as he was termed by his most intimate friends) has left a vacant chair that never can be filled. He married a daughter of the late Mr. August Le Fevre, in 1868, the result of the union being three sons viz: Alfred (Wentworth Falls), Arthur and George (Tumut) and five daughters, viz : Mrs. H. Ibbotson and Miss Susan (Goulburn), Mrs. J. T. Clout (Tumut Plains), Mrs. G. Bartholomew (Jerilderie) and Miss Lottie (Tumut Plains); also two brothers: George William (Tumut Plains) and Evelyn (Moss Vale), and one sister Mrs. J. Osmond (Adaminaby). These are left to mourn the loss of a faithful and devoted husband, a loving father whose chief aim and ambition was the welfare of them all, and a brother of whom they were proud; and, when we look around on the closing scenes of a life well spent, of one, who dearly loved his church, it tends to rob Death of a sting it would otherwise possess. The funeral took place on Sunday last, the remains being interred in the Church of England portion of the Old Cemetery, and not with-standing numbers had not heard of the death, the cortege of sympathising friends, comprising persons in 131 vehicles, besides horsemen, was one of the longest we have seen. Mr. H. W. Hoad was the under-taker and Rev. Ross-Edwards (Church of England) officiated at the grave. We tender the bereaved ones our deepest sympathy and condolence.[1]
