Biography

James C Strong Jr. was born in 1822, most likely in West Salem, Mercer, PA, the son of James Strong (1781-1842) born in Ireland and Margaret Doyle (1795-1851) born in Pennsylvania. His parents married in Franklin township, Adams county, PA at Upper Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church (northwest of Gettysburg) on 24 March 1813. Doyle, sometimes spelled Doil, is an Irish surname which indicates Viking heritage. Strong is an English/Scottish surname.

By 1820 the Strong family had moved to Delaware, Mercer, PA where father James was a farmer. They continue to be in the census there for 1830, then in 1840 living nearby at West Salem, Mercer, PA.

Margaret (Doyle) and James Strong Sr. had six known children: Mary Anna "Maggie" Strong (1819-1899) who married Daniel McClain McClurg and lived in Mercer, PA ; James C. Strong (1822-1905) who married Phoebe Ann Taggert and moved to Andrew/Perry, Jackson, Iowa; Margaret Jane Strong (1824-1891) who married Samuel Potter McLaughlin and lived in Paton, Greene, Iowa; John N. Bowman Strong (1829-1908) who married Isabelle McDonald and lived in Mercer, PA; Eliza Jemima Strong (1833-1862) who married Oliver Woodward Wheeler and lived in Maquoketa, Jackson, Iowa; and Hannah Keziah Strong (1836-1926) who married Elisha H Doty, and moved westward to NE, CA, and finally Nevada.

His father James Strong Sr. passed in June 1842. The family was still residing in West Salem in 1850. His mother Margaret passed on 15 March 1851 and is buried at Rock Ridge Cemetery, Greenville, Mercer, PA-- the same place as her son, John N. Bowman Strong. Clarence, Noble, and Bowman may be associated Strong family names or may be that of the Doyle family.

James C Strong Jr. married Phoebe Ann Taggart (his middle name may be Clarence as was his son's middle name). They were members of the United Presbyterian church. They had 3 known children: twins Mary Martha Strong and Phoebe Ann Strong born 29 Jan, 1861 in Iowa, and son Clarence Noble Strong (1881-1889) who passed young. Mary Martha Strong married Benjamin Franklin Brown (1861-1913) and they lived in Perry, Jackson, IA and later Maquoketa. Phoebe Ann Strong married Hiram E. Grover and they lived in Fulton, Jackson, IA.

James C. Strong was a farmer. The family moved to Perry, Jackson, Iowa by 1850.

Wife Phoebe (Taggart) Strong passed on 13 Oct 1892 in Andrew, Jackson, Iowa and James went to live with his daughter Phoebe (Strong) Brown for awhile before moving to Bloomfield, Clinton, Iowa in the Maquoketa area, where he worked as a shoemaker. He passed on 19 Oct 1905 at the age of 83.

James' mother Margaret Doyle’s mtDNA (maternal line: mother’s mother’s mother, etc.) has the greatest genetic matches in England and Germany, followed by Ireland, Scotland, and France.
