Biography

Jacob Stoffer was born in about 1809 in Pennsylvania, according to U.S. census records. [1][2][3] His father was also born in Pennsylvania, and his mother was born in England.[4]

Jacob Stoffer (name on the record also can be interpreted as Staffer) married Mary Rickart (name on the record also can be interpreted as Richart) in Stark County, Ohio, on 14 November 1830. Both were residents of Stark County; Jacob in Lake Township and Mary in Marlborough Township.[5] The death certificate for their son William H. Stoffer names his parents as Jacob Stoffer and Mary Rickard, both natives of Pennsylvania.[6]

The couple resided in Ohio, where most of their children were born, until sometime between about 1853 (birth in Ohio of son Jacob) and 1857 (birth in Indiana of daughter Almira), when they removed to Indiana.

The 1860 U.S. Census recorded Jacob Stoffer, age 51 and a farmer, in Pleasant Township, Wabash County, Indiana, with Mary Stoffer, age 50 (presumably his wife), and eight younger Stoffers (presumably their children). Jacob and Mary were born in Pennsylvania; all but one of the younger generation were born in Ohio; and 3-year-old Almira, the youngest child on the record, was born in Indiana.[7]

In 1870 the U.S. Census recorded Jacob Stofer, age 58 and a farmer, in Pleasant Township, Wabash County, Indiana, with Mary Stofer, age 56, and their presumed children: a second Mary Stofer, age 22, Elizabeth Stofer, 20, a second Jacob Stofer, 18, and Almira Stofer, 15. Jacob and Mary were born in Pennsylvania and the younger family members were born in Ohio. [8]

The 1880 U.S. Census recorded Jacob Stofer, age 70 and a farmer, in Pleasant Township, Wabash County, Indiana, with wife Mary Stofer, 68, daughter Lydia Stofer, 23, grandson James Piper, 12, and granddaughter Daisy Stofer, 6. Jacob and Mary were born in Pennsylvania; Lydia was born in Ohio; and the grandchildren were born in Indiana.[4]

Research Notes

Stark County, Ohio

Lake Township and Marlboro Township are adjacent townships on the northern tier of Stark County. Uniontown and Hartville are among the named places within the boundaries of Lake Township, which is the western of these two townships. The city of Canton is not far south of Lake Township. There are no named places in Marlboro Township. The city of Alliance is in the township east of Marlboro.

Searching findagrave, I did not see any burials in Stark County for people named Stoffer or Stofer who were born early enough to this man's parents, and none who looked likely to be siblings. There are more recent people with both names, however. Smith-62120 19:29, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

In the 1830 U.S. census, there were two "Stofer" households living in Lake township, Stark County, Ohio: Samuel and Adam. ::'Doherty-2064 01:42, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

John Stover and Anna Shively married in Stark County, Ohio, on 12 March 1835. Minister was George Shively. Elias Stover and Mary Yerrick were married in Stark County on 21 April 1835.[20]
