Mr. James Alexander Stewart, 77, of Seaview Street, Byron Bay, who was also well known in the Booyong and Clunes districts, died in Lismore yesterday morning after a long illness.
Mr. Stewart was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Stewart, who were among the first settlers and selectors at Booyong. He was born at Burrawang on the South Coast, but came to Booyong as a boy.
As a young man Mr. Stewart went to Western Australia and successfully followed goldmining pursuits for some years. He returned to the North Coast and settled at Byron Bay where he had lived for about 35 years. He carried on successfully as a building contractor until retirement some years ago.
Mr. Stewart is survived by a widow, two sons, Alexander (A.I.F.) and John (R.A.A.F.), and a daughter, Miss Nancy Stewart (Byron Bay).
Mesdames K. McKinnon (Clunes), E. McInerney (Goolmangar) and N. Gear (Gympie) are sisters of Mr. Stewart, and Mr. Robert Stewart, of Booyong is a brother.
