My paternal 3xGG William Steward (c1806-1845) is alleged to have taken his mother's maiden name when he joined the army but was actually a Pocock from the Isle of Wight. I have linked William to the couple I believe to be his parents. Numerous DNA matches to both of his assumed parents confirm that this is either correct or close. However I'm keen to find the documentary evidence too.
Another ancestor is even more of a brick wall: William Lewis (1837-1903), Royal Engineers, Barrack sergeant at Brompton Barracks in Chatham, joined up in Brighton when he was 10 and his parentage is often misattributed online.
