Renowned Australian artist Janet Cumbrae-Stewart was born Janet Agnes Cumbrae Stewart at or about Brighton in Victoria in what would later become Australia.
She was the daughter of Francis Edward Stewart, an early settler of Gladstone, Queensland, and his wife Agnes, née Park, of Wellington, New Zealand.
From 1901 through 1907 Cumbrae-Stewart studied at the Melbourne National Gallery School, where she was taught by Lindsay Bernard Hall and Frederick McCubbin. From 1909 through 1919 she exhibited with the Victorian Artists Society.
In 1922 she left Australia with her sister Mrs. Beatrice Peverill and spent the next 16 years painting and exhibiting in Europe. She returned to Australia in 1937; and by the outbreak of World War 2 she had already decided to stay.
A significant portion of her artistic output is studies of the female nude in pastel – and she is highly regarded for her work in this medium.
Ms Cumbrae Stewart passed away in September 1960 in Melbourne and it is believed she was Cremated at the Springvale Crematorium, Melbourne and her ashes scattered.
