James Stewart was born on 6 June 1782 in Glenalbert, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of Donald Stewart (1750 – ?) and his wife Janet Scott (1755–1799).

He passed away on 13 June 1860 in Dalguise, Perthshire, Scotland.
