Biography

Alexander was born in 1886. He passed away in 1976. [1] His obituary:

On Jun 22, 1926, Mr. Alexander Stewart of Ste. 202, 8403 - 142 St. passed away in his 90th year. He leaves to mourn his loss, his loving wife, Mrs. Emily Stewart; two sons, Alex, Onaping, Ontario, and John, Edmonton; two sisters, Mrs. Isabel Hamilton, Montreal; and Mrs. Lillian Dorrance, Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. The funeral service was held in the Roy and Owen Chapel of Chimes, on Thursday, June 24th at 1 p.m. with Rev. B. Cowley officiating... [2]

Alexander G. Stewart, of 14003 - 101st Ave., a man who helped survey the Canada-Alaska border in 1908, died Tuesday. He was 90.
Mr. Stewart served as a member of the international boundary commission until 1911 and came to Edmonton in 1912. Twice that year he hiked to the Peace River country from the city while working on the original subdivision of the are into 20 townships.
During the First World War he enlisted with the Canadian Engineers and helped construct rail lines near the front. After the war, he returned to Edmonton and became chief surveyor with the land titles office.
Between the wars, Mr. Stewart was engaged in mining activities in Yellowknife, Great Bear Lake and other points in the North.
In the Second World War he worked on the Alaska Highway and the Canol Pipeline project.
In 1951, he started a private practice with several partners which at the time of his death was known as Stewart, Weir, Stewart, Watson and Heinrichs.
Mr. Stewart served on many boards and organizations, including the Edmonton Interim Development Appeal Board and the Provincial Planning Appeal Board. He was also an honorary life member of the Alberta Land Surveyors Association and the Professional Engineers Association of Alberta.
He was active with the Kiwanis Club and with the United Community Fund. [3]
