Biography

James "Luther" Stewart, son of James M. and Edna (Cordell) Stewart, was born on 29 May 1928 at Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.[1][2] He appeared on the census of 10 April 1930 in the home of his parents at Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.[3] He appeared on the census of 3 April 1940 in the home of his parents at Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.[4]

He married Annie Joyce Kershaw, daughter of Hugh Marian and Almedia (Clayton) Kershaw, on 28 Jan. 1950.[2]

Luther died on 30 Nov. 2017 in Beach County, Florida.

Mr. James “Luther” Stewart, Sr., 89, of Panama City Beach, FL, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017. He was born in Birmingham, AL on May 29, 1928 to James M. and Edna Stewart. While living in Birmingham, he was a business owner where he owned a service station and a garage as well as being a property manager. He moved to Panama City Beach in 1971 and owned the Bel-Mar Court Motel. He also worked in condo maintenance at Condo World Realty, construction at Edgewater Beach Construction, and built swimming pools for Panama Pools. Mr. Stewart was Baptist by faith and served in the United States Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He also served in the Alabama Air National Guard. Mr. Stewart was a kind, caring, generous, energetic gentleman. He loved his family and friends, putting their needs before his own. He was a “Good Samaritan” and loved to teach others how to fix things. He fought a long courageous and valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease and COPD. Mr. Stewart is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elizabeth Hawkins and Jean Jones; one brother, Robert Stewart; son, James Luther Stewart, Jr.; special companion, Ruby Norman; nephew, Greg Stewart and niece, Carol Anne Hawkins McKinney. He is survived by two daughters, Linda Allen (Jim) and Gail Fannin; one brother, Albert Stewart (Linda); former wife, Joyce Stewart; grandchildren, Jill A. Dixon (John), Michelle F. Cuchens (Joel) and John Allen; great-granddaughter, Molly C. Ledbetter (Kody); great-great-grandson, Kaden Ledbetter; numerous nieces and nephews; step-family, Jean Norman and family. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 4, 2017 at Southerland Family Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will begin receiving friends at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Mr. Stewart’s family would like to express their thanks to Bay Medical Center, Tender Touch, and Covenant Hospice for the care and compassion given to Mr. Stewart.[1]
