Mathew A Stewart was a pioneer of Apopka, FL. He homesteaded 3 miles E of Lake Apopka under Armed Occupation Act.
He was an Orange County Commissioner in 1855.
He and partner William Miles bought the bottom floor of The Lodge in 1868 for a General Store. The top floor was the Mason Lodge.
Pvt Mathew Albritton Stewart was born to 'Leonora Jane and 'John L Stewart, Jr on 30 Nov 1822 in 'Appling, Georgia.
Military
Stewart enlisted at Fort Reed in Martin's Co. Warren's 1st Florida Militia on 27 Jan 1837 in the Florida War. He signed up for a 6 month hitch. He was marked as present. Muster-out 5 Jun 1837 present. There were no remunerations documented.[1]

In 1860, their address was shown as the Mellonville Post Office, Dist. 3, Orange Co, FL, but that isn't where they lived. It would have been in the Apopka area. His son Erastus had just been buried in Apopka in 1858 and his entire family lived in the area. He was living Clay Springs of Apopka in 1870. Jonathan E Stewart was Census taker. Mathew, 37, was a farmer, Cindarilla, 32, Frances J, 13, James L, 9, Miles M, 5, Fillmore, 3 were in the home.[4]
In 1870, they were in Clay Springs, Div 17, Orange, FL, USA (Clay Springs was renamed Wekiwa Springs). Mathew 48 was farming, Cinderella 44 was house keeping, James 18 was farm labor, Miles 15, the Florida born, and Jonathan 12 were in the house. Dear Erastus had already died. The farm was worth $5,000 and the personal estate $2,000.[5]
On 15 May '1871, The U.S. Postal Office recorded Mathew Stewart as the 'U.S. Post Master at the Orange Lodge, Apopka, Orange, Florida.[6]
Stewart was issued a Homestead Land Patent for 79.98 on a survey done 10 May 1876 under statutory reference 12 Stat 392 under act 20 May 1862. Property in Apopka at 1 S 1/2 NE Tallahassee No 21 D 28 E 6.[7][8]
Cinderella was 54 and Mathew 58 in 1880 when the census was taken in Precinct 1, Orange, FL. Mathew was Orange Grower. He was one of the earliest orange growers in the Orange County. James L 24, Miles M, 24, M. A. Carpenter, grandson, 13, and Sallie Carpenter, granddaughter, 12, were in the house. These are deceased Francis' children now living with the grandparents. Where did little William Carpenter go?Four months in 1870.[9]
Come the 30th day of June 1885, the couple were in 11 district of Orange, Florida (Apopka). Mathew Carpenter was 62 and Cinderella was 58. They were orange growers. They were from Georgia. Both of Cinderella's parents were from Georgia. Jonathon's father was a Georgian but his mother was a North Carolinian.[10]
Death and Burial
Mathew Albritton Stewart died 15 Jul 1889 at the age of 66 in Apopka, Orange, Florida, USA.
He was buried in the Apopka Church Cemetery, Orange, Florida, USA.[11]

Mathew, his father, some of his brothers, and many neighbors owned slaves. Mathew was documented as having only two young slaves, one 15- and one 11-year-old male slave in 1860. They had one slave house.
