Norman was born 22 Jan 1876 in West Bay, Bay City, Michigan. [1] By 1880 his family lived in Ogemaw Springs, Michigan.
That year they went to London, Ontario, Canada, where Norman's father worked for a while. In 1884 Norman's parents and family went to Calgary, Alberta on the newly completed Canadian Pacific Railway, then drove the final 100 miles, a three day trip with team and democrat, to their homestead. [2] [3] They farmed at the present-day Penhold. [4] In 1890, the railway reached Red Deer. That connection allowed Norman the opportunity to send a sample of his wheat to the Chicago Worlds Fair, and it won a prize. He went to work for the Columbia River Lumber Co. as a feller and sawyer at Beavermouth, British Columbia. [5] In 1896, Norman became a Canadian citizen. Norman returned to Penhold and lived on the family farm with his mother. [6] In 1902, Norman and his brother Thomas started a hardware business, Stewart Bros. in Penhold as partners. Their mother and sister Mabel lived with them in 1906. [7]
Norman had been interested in the governance of the village. Penhold incorporated in April 1904. Two men were nominated for the position of overseer---Herman (Henry) Emmerich of the Farmers' Store and Norman Stewart, a local implement, lumber and hardware merchant. Henry Emmerich won the contest six votes to five with Norman Stewart's ballot being one of those cast in favour of Mr. Emmerich, but controversy erupted quickly. By the fall of 1904, Mr. Emmerich had resigned as overseer and a new election was held on December 12th with Norman Stewart being the unanimous choice. In 1907, Amos Strong became the Village overseer and Norman Stewart was secretary treasurer and Village constable. Strong soon resigned and Norman assumed the position of overseer, so from 1907 to 1913 his salary was $30 per year, plus 2.5% of these taxes he was able to collect. [8]
Norman Stewart and Esther Hives were married 17 Jun 1908 at the Cathedral of the Redeemer in Calgary. [9] [10] By 1916, they had 2 children, John age 7 and Irene, 5. [11] In 1921, they were enumerated with three more children, Norman, Mary Elizabeth and Kathleen. [12] In 1926 they were enumerated with one more child, a daughter. [13]
Norman died 11 Jun 1965 and was buried in Red Deer Cemetery, Red Deer, Alberta. [14]
