Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

As recorded in England's Non-Conformist records "Joseph Steward, son of John and Ellen Steward was born the 4th January 1664, Cheshire, England."[1] His Quaker birth is recorded as being on the 4th month 21st day 1664 to parents John and Ellen Steward of Winkle as recorded in the Cheshire County Quarterly Meeting. [2]

Origins

He arrived as a minor in November 1682 being apprenticed to Quaker Friend Phineas Pemberton a grocer of Bolton, Lancashire. Based upon his age recorded in the 'Submission' ship log Joseph Steward was born in 1668, Lancashire, England.

Pennsylvania Arrival

At age fourteen and one-half (14 1/2) years Joseph Steward left the Port of Liverpoole on 5th 7mo. 1682 in the ship "Submission" with James Harrison, agent of William Penn. [3] Harrison was a shoemaker from Bolton, Lancashire and an active Friends minister for which he received "much punishment" from the local authorities. It was Harrison who was appointed by Penn to sell newly granted Pennsylvania lands to Friends. Accompanying them aboard the "Submission" was Harrison's son-in-law Phineas Pemberton, grocer of Bolton and also an actively persecuted Friend. Joseph Steward was a protege (apprentice) of Phineas Pemberton and "undoubtedly lived (with Phineas) for twelve years after arriving. [3]

The 'Submission' lost her course and instead of entering the Delaware Bay entered the Chesapeake Bay landing on 2nd day 9th mo. (November) 1682 at Choptank, Maryland. [3] Joseph accompanied Harrison and Pemberton who made their way across country to New Castle, Delaware where they planned to meet up with Penn. The families of Harrison and Pemberton were left at Choptank at the house of William Dickenson.

Joseph Steward appears in the Registry of Arrivals in Bucks county, Pennsylvania. The Registry was maintained by Phineas Pemberton, his patron. [3]

Marriage and Children

Joseph married Alice Wright on 7 12th mo. (February) 1694 at Burlington, New Jersey. [4]

"Joseph Steward and Alice Wright aforesaid have the second time published their Intentions of Marriage and enquiry having been made her mother also Signifying her consent we find nothing to hinder their proceedings leaves them to our Brethren the men Friends to conclude the Young man producing a Certificate from that meeting whereof he belonged."

Alice Wright was a member of the Chesterfield, Burlington county Monthly Meeting and on 6th of 12 mo. 1694 Joseph "Stewart" stated he "desires a certificate to the Monthly Meeting at Chesterfield whereto the young woman doth belong." The children of Joseph and Alice Steward were [5] :

He passed away in 1715 at Chesterfield, his Will being probated 20 October 1715, Burlington county. "Alse" (Alice) his wife is mentioned along with their children John, Joseph, Josiah, Elizabeth and Ellen. Alice and son John were named executors. Witnesses were Richard Harrison, Richard Chappill, Joshua Wright. On July 28 1715 the appraised inventory of his personal estate was valued at L225.6 and recorded with the court. [5] Author E.S. Stewart says Joseph was probably buried in the old burying ground beside the Crosswicks Meeting House but there are no tombstones signifying his burial plot.

Widow Alice Steward married 2nd Richard Harrison. [3] Alice Harrison died in 1760/1 and her Will was proved 11 Feb 1761. In it she mentions sons Josiah, John and Joseph and daughter Elizabeth in addition to several grandchildren. [3]

Hi. Thanks for the notice you left on my profile about the Armstrong source, it isn't available for online viewing so I ordered the book from the Genealogical Society of New Jersey. Several of my direct early N.J. ancestors are included so I'm interested in seeing Armstrong's sources.

I took a look at the Joseph Steward (abt 1668, Lancashire-1715) profile you reference and a look at the other Joseph Steward, born in 1664 son of John & Ellen Steward of Mobberley/WInkle, Cheshire, England. Either they are the same person as suggested by the merge request; or, some of the information about Joseph Steward, born 4 Jan 1664, Cheshire, is conflated with information from the Joseph Steward b. 1668, Lancashire and the two are actually different men.

Except for his birth, the Cheshire Joseph Steward is without sources required for major life-events of Pre-1700 profiles i.e. his supposed emigration and then marriage at age 29 to Alice Wright who also happens to be included as the wife of the Joseph Steward, b. 1668, Lancashire profile. One of the two children attached to the Cheshire Joseph, 'son' John Steward is born 3 years before the marriage to Alice Wright in 1695 so there appears to be some additional confusion.

Again the Cheshire Joseph profile could be conflated with info. from the Lancashire born Joseph who's information begins in early New Jersey with his apprenticeship as a minor.

The Joseph Steward of Cheshire has eight other (sourced) brothers and sisters. Are there any immigration records pertaining to any one of them? That would strengthen the support that both Joseph's are the same person. If you're a descendant of this family line I'll bow out of the examination process and leave it to your expertise. Cheers and Good Luck. Leigh Anne
