Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Celia (Steward) Addison is a part of US Black heritage.

Celia STEWARD was born in 1829 in Virginia.

According to her daughter, Vina's death record, her father's name was Rush ADDISON.

In 1870,[1] Silvey ADISON is listed along with several younger individuals with the same surname working as servants of George MOORE in Clendenin Township, Mason County, West Virginia. While it is possible these additional individuals with the ADISON surname could be Celia's children, their exact relationship was not noted by the census enumerator so it will not be possible to determine relationship without further research. It is possible that George MOORE might have been their owner during the slave period as he is believed to be the same individual who was listed as owning slaves in Mason County, Virginia in 1850.[2]

Celia was also listed as being in George MOORE's household in 1880.

Note: There is a tombstone in Bruce Chapel Cemetery in Mason County, West Virginia that says that George MOORE died in July 1880 and his wife Frances (HARNESS) MOORE died on 11 March 1878. - Find A Grave: Memorial #91947646

By 1900, the widowed Celia was head of household living in Gallipolis, Gallia, Ohio.[3]

She passed away in 1907.[4] Burial was in the Pine Street Cemetery, Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.[5]
