William Steward was born in CT July 4, 1786 and spent most of his boyhood life in Oswego NY. He fought in the war of 1812 and was wounded in the Battle of Chipawa and was in Ft. Erie when it was blown up.William came to Van Buren Arkansas in 1836 and purchased land from the government. He built a home in 1837 and moved his family to that land. He built the first grist mill and saw mill in Crawford County. He married Phoebe Dean in 1817 and they had 3 children Harvey, Alexander and Darwin. Phoebe died in 1824. In 1832 he married Malissa Dickerson and they had 9 children. William Steward died in Crawford County November 23, 1862. (From genforum, Fran Alverson Warren, 7/31/1999)
