Biography

Joseph Stephens was born in Louisiana.

Joseph was born on January 1st, 1878 in either Louisiana or Texas to parents James Jackson Stephens and Mary Frances Ray.^[1] His father died when he was five, and he and his four siblings were raised by his widowed mother.

Joseph married Nellie McKim in approximately 1907 and had three children with her.

1. Joseph Barrett Stephens, Jr (1907-1950)
2. Louis Malcom Stephens (1909-1969)
3. Harry James Stephens, Sr (1918-1973)

They lived in Grant Parish, Louisiana for the first part of their marriage and then settled in Beaumont, Texas. Joseph worked in lumber and building material; in the late teens and early 1920s, he managed Kirby Lumber Company in Beaumont.

Later in life, Joseph owned a filling station in Vidor, TX. Joseph passed away on July 22nd, 1938 in Jefferson County, Texas.
