MILITARY RECORD

Stephens, Calvin

Was born 5 March 1821 in Spartanburg, SC. By the beginning of the war in April of 1861, Calvin was 40 years old and had 10 children who were born between 1858 and 1876. He was considered too old for the first conscription but by March of 1862 the Confederacy eased their age limit. He had just turned 42 and on 19 March 1862 enlisted in the Palmetto Sharpshooters. On June 30 1862, while his Company K was involved with charging a battery of cannon at Frayser's Farm was wounded by canister and spent the next year in different hospitals. In 1863 Calvin was transferred to Hampton's Legion Infantry and by the summer of 1864, he was discharged from the Confederacy. Calvin Stephens is my Great Great Grandfather and I am a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans under him. Ron Giamongo
