The centre had a capacity of 200; of these, three quarters were expected to emigrate to countries such as Canada or Australia. The training program initially consisted of a 'testing period', involving heavy manual tasks such as road-making and log-splitting; those judged suitable were then trained in dairy work, ploughing, horse management, rough carpentry and seed planting.

Orient Line RMS "Orsova" left from Tilbury Docks on London's Thames River. Sailed to Gilbraltar, can remember the big rocks and the monkeys, did not go ashore as could not afford tug fare – Mt Etna in Italy was erupting as they went past and sat up till after midnight watching this marvellous sight. Was able to go ashore in Naples as the ship docked. On to Port Said remembers the dirty beggar children in the streets and also them diving for coin thrown from the boat, through the Suez Canal and on to Aden. From here they sailed direct to Perth stopping at Fremantle, where they stood on Australian soil/sand for the first time. Struck rough weather in the Bight before stopping in Melbourne, getting off in Melbourne. The weather was good overall on what can be remembered and also the food was very good.
