Biography

James J. Stephens was born about 1817 in Tennessee. His parents are presently unknown.

He first married Elizabeth Wells on 9 July 1843 in Harrison County, Texas. They had two children:

• James K Polk (1845-?)
• Gary Davis (1846-1923)

He married Martha Horne Ramsey in Harrison County on 6 Mar 1847. They had five children:

• Jasper Hardy (1848-1924)
• Charlotte Elizabeth (1850-1947)
• Nancy Augusta Delma (1852-1928)
• Martha Emily (1854-1944)
• Jacob D (Jake) (1856->1920)

In 1850, the Stephens family lived in Greenwood Ward of Caddo Parish, Louisiana. The household included James J. Stephen, 33, born in Tennessee, a saddler; William H. Stephen (probably his wife, Martha), 23, b. Tennessee, also a saddler; JKP Stephens, 5, b. Texas; GD Stephens, 4, b. Texas; Jasper H. Stephens, 2, b. Texas; and Charlotte Stephens, five months, b. Louisiana. ^[1]
