Fernie Lewis Steley was born on 7 November 1910 in Queensland, Australia, son of John Abel Steley (1890–1959) and Isabella Robinson Turnbull (1889–19790 ^[1].

He married Margaret Gwendoline Schnitzerling on 14 December 1934 ^[2]. The couple had two sons before their divorce, including one child Dennis (1945-2007) ^[3]

Fernie died on 4 April 2002 in Howard, Queensland, aged 91. He was buried in Howard Remembrance Park, Queensland. ^[4]
