Biography

Birth: Census records for Jesse Statham yield a birth year range from 1770 to 1780, but he was on the 1787 Wilkes County, Georgia tax list with 150 acres of land and would need to have been at least 21 years of age, so born no later than 1766. He would have been the child of John Statham by his first wife Elizabeth, as they sold land in Albemarle County in 1767.

Marriage: He married Eady Duncan by 1789, based on the estimated birth year of Anderson Statham, who is believed to be their oldest son. Eady's maiden name comes from the estate records of her father, Henry Duncan.

Elbert County: Jesse was on the list of men selected for the Elbert County Petit Jury on 1 Oct 1793. Along with his father, he was named as a voter for Elbert County delegates to the 1795 Constitutional Convention.

Headright land: On 5 Sep 1796 he was issued a survey warrant for 400 acres of headright land in Elbert County for himself and four in the family, i.e., 200 acres on his own headrights and 50 acres for each dependent. A tract for 372 acres was surveyed for him on 10 Jan 1797 and granted on 12 Jun 1815. The disposition of this land is not yet known. He reported only 68½ acres on the 1815 tax list for Elbert County but according to the Georgia Archives, "Land that had been surveyed for an individual was subject to taxation even though the land had not yet been granted to that individual."

He registered in Elbert County for the 1805 land lottery, drawing Lot 183 in District 3 Baldwin County.

There is a single compiled military service record index card for Jesse showing that he served during the War of 1812 as a private with 1 Regt (Harris') Georgia Militia. This is the same regiment that two of his (presumed) sons, Anderson and James, served with.

Jesse was found in Elbert County through at least Sep 1827 (see John Statham's 1823 estate Elbert Co GA, attached to John's profile). Jesse was in Walton County for the 1830 census but thereafter found in Clarke County. He registered in Capt. Jennings' district, Clarke County for the 1832 Cherokee land lottery (drew Lot 119 in Section 3, District 28, which looks to be present day Catoosa County) as well as for the Gold lottery held the same year (drew Lot 87 in District 20, Section 3 of what became Paulding County),

Death: Jesse was last found on the 1840 census in Clarke County, Georgia (as Jesse Statum, indexed as Statun), he and a similarly aged female (60-70) its only occupants. Neither could be found in 1850 and are presumed to have died but no estate records have been found for them.

Children of Jesse and Eady (Duncan) Statham: Jesse was the only one of John's sons who remained in Elbert as long as his father lived so the younger Stathams found in marriage, tax, poor school and other Elbert County records during this period were most like his and Eady's children.
