Birth and parentage: Thomas's daughter Izora was the informant on his death certificate but some of the information she reported is provably wrong. First, that Thomas was born on 3 Jul 1863; the month and day are probably correct and have been used but 1858 is given as the year of birth in this profile because he was two years old in the 1860 census.
Second, that his parents were John Statham and Unice Long. On 23 Nov 1900 and 12 Apr 1902, T.J. Leslie aka T.J. Statham, identified as the son of Thompson Leslie and Flora Statham, accepted part of his legacy from the estate of George Walter Green (see page 3 of GW Green estate notes, which has been uploaded. Note: this review erroneously states that Green's father was George Walter Green Sr. but according to a death notice located since the review was written, it was George Washington Green). Walter Green was Thomas's first cousin, the son of Flora Statham's sister Emma Statham Green; and as his parents and siblings were deceased and he had no wife or children, his heirs-at-law were his mother's surviving siblings and/or their heirs.
Records in the name of Lesley: As J. Lesley, age 2, he was in the 1860 Hinds County, Mississippi household of (his grandmother) Caroline L. Statham (as C.S. Staton). In 1870, as James Lesley, age 12, he was shown as a farm laborer in the Clayton County, Georgia household of Henry W. Johnson; Caroline Statham also headed a household in Clayton County that included her mother, Martha J. Seibels, and her sister, Eliza Seibels (usually seen as Eliza but identified as Betsy, the daughter of Martha Seibels, in the will of her mother's sister Helen Lamkin).
Adoption of Statham surname: The earliest record found for Thomas under the surname of Statham is the 1880 Campbell County, Georgia census, in which he appeared as James Statham (indexed as Stothram). Thereafter, he generally appeared in records as Thomas J. or T.J. Statham.
Marriage: Thomas married Isabel Clark Davis in Carroll County, Georgia on 19 May 1884 at the home of her father L.E. Davis (Lyttleton Early Davis [1]). The marriage record and marriage notice name her as "Miss I.C. Davis"; her first name comes from census and other records and her middle name comes from the 1880 census in which she appeared as Clark I. Davis.
Based on the reported birthplaces of their three children, Thomas and Isabel remained in Georgia through at least 1887 but had relocated to Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama by 1891 when their son James was born, and they can thereafter be found in that location.
Children of Thomas James Statham and Isabel Clark Davis (more on Thomas, his parents, grandparents and children can be found in Charles S Statham descendants, Book of Stathams, pp. 101-102, which has been attached to this profile):
1 - Izora Bell Statham, born on 21 Sep 1885 in Carroll County, Georgia; married Melvin A. Morton c1906; died in Anniston on 17 Nov 1963. The date and place of Izora's birth come from her Social Security application.
2 - Bertha Viola Statham, born in May 1887 according to the 1900 census and died on 11 Feb 1902 in Anniston. Her middle name comes from the memoriam published in the same newspaper as her death notice but a week later; the author is not identified but the memoriam is subscribed "Brooklyn NY, Feb 15." My guess is that it was written by Sallie Statham, the sister of Bertha's paternal grandmother though it's difficult to pinpoint Sallie's precise location at the time. She was living in Brooklyn as of 1910 but news items and other records place her in Mississippi and California at various points between 1900 and 1910.
3 - James Colbert Statham, born on 14 Mar 1891 in Anniston, Calhoun County, died on 26 Jun 1957 in Birmingham, Jefferson County [2]. His middle name and place of birth come from his WWI draft registration. He married Lillie Wells in Birmingham on 12 Dec 1911.
